Fifth Annual Rib - Cookoff

Governor's Corner
Moose Legion

By George Fields, Governor

I am very proud and pleased to congratulate David McCleary for receiving the shining star award for administrator of the year. David was presented this award at our state convention in Springfield. David is very deserving of this award for all the hours and hard labor he puts into our lodge!

The enrollment on September 12th was exciting. We had a lodge full of special guests. Supreme Governor William R. Scott and his wife Dubravla (Duke) enjoyed themselves very much that evening. Also in attendance were Rollie Abeil, Regional Manager and the president of the Illinois State Board Scott Baikie along with his state board of officers. Deputy Supreme Governor Joe Albert, from our very own lodge, was also in attendance for this great night of activities. A wonderful dinner was served before the enrollment. Thanks to all of the cooks, waitress, clean up crew and everyone that pitched in to help make this evening such a special event. We could not of done it with out you. The ritual staff was great, congratulations Dave Killen for putting together such an impressive team. Membership chairman, Ray Gornik, put together a nice group of 17 new members to be enrolled that evening. We also had the pleasure of honoring brothers Willie McCleary and Bob Dewitt for their 50 YEARS in this great fraternity. Also announcing Brother Ray Gornik as Rookie of the Year.

A great night it was for Zion Benton Family Center #667! It is impossible to mention everyone that was involved, but to list a few, administrative assistant Deann Oglesby, Board of officers #667 and 859, Committee chairmen, and most important of all is the members and families of the great Zion Benton Family Center that made this night possible!

Cub Scout pack # 673 put on a wonderful breakfast September 10th for Grandparent's Day. Thank you Cub Scouts for your donation to raise the roof fund. Remember the Rib Cook Off October 7th. There is still time to enter this annual event! To all the members - participation and support is what keeps this great lodge on top! Thanks again to all of you that are there when we need your help!

By Dave Killen, Chairman

The Moose Legion Camp out was a super time. I would like to thank all the helpers and those who came out to help., It was a great honor having our Supreme Governor here last month. I am grateful to everyone who helped make that evening a great success. Our next Moose Legion Breakfast / Meeting will be on October 8th. I would like to invite anyone who is interested in the Degree of Service to our meeting. See you at the lodge!

MOOSE ON THE LOOSE
FAMILY ACTIVITIES

~ Congratulations ~

to all who biked the Wednesday night bicycle rides. We managed to ride a total of 152 miles, with a few Boy Scouts logging some miles for the "Cycling Merit Badge". Great Job Guys !! A Big Thank You to all the groups who cooked. The meals were enjoyed by all!

Don't lose your bicycle legs over winter, keep it going by participating in a Spin Class And for those who want to ease into cycling but couldn't make it this summer. Spin Classes are a great way to prepare for next spring. They're offered at fitness centers, some park districts , and colleges.
Thanks for a great summer and many memories .

This is the time of year for our Pumpkin Carving and Halloween Party.

Also, mom and dad, we try to have something going on for our kids to do every Friday from 6 to 8. Sometimes a date may be overlooked, and I am sorry for this, but we occasionally go out of town for conventions. I am getting a small committee together so we may come up with new ideas and make sure all Friday’s are covered. If you would like to get involved, let us know.

I would like to thank all of you who helped with the Kid’s Dance. I hope you all had fun. October dates and activities for our kids room are:

October 6 Arts & Crafts

October 13 Pumpkin Carving

October 20 Game night. Dress up in a costume. We will have pop and a cupcake prize for first, second and third place winners.

October 27 Halloween Bingo

Our kids room is open at all times that the lodge is open. The children can watch movies, play games and color any time.

– Johnny Larison

BEAR / PACKER TAILGATE
GOLF OUTING

Yes, we enjoyed another successful Bear/Packer Tailgate Party The weather outside was a little damp, but that didn't damper the excitement inside with the game and the fans.

When the Bears made their first touchdown it sounded like the roof would come down with all the cheering, hooting and hollering. Mixed with a few groans from the Packer fans.

With all the competition between the fans, the fun and excitement of the day was elect5rifying.

This dishes to pass were another example of how everyone comes together for a party. All the food was delicious. I tried to sample them all, but there were just too many of them!

Zion Moose Team were the winners of this year’s 3rd annual golf outing held on September 3rd at Big Oaks Golf course with a score of 59. The team consisted of Scott Ruckebiel, Daniel Leicht, David McCleary, and Bob Surano.

We had 35 golfers this year that participated. Everyone had a great time and the weather was wonderful. Thank you to all that helped out with this event during the day this could not have gone over with great success. Hope to see everyone there next year

– Robert Surano, Sports Chairman

Marcia Miller, Senior Regent

(847) 872-4707

Hi Co-Workers!!

We want to congratulate Daryl Albert who received her College of Regents degree at Mooseheart during International Convention. Daryl would like to thank everyone for coming to her celebration on September 16. Also honored at this celebration were Noren (Renie) Sibiski and Marimargaret (Peggy) Lambert who received their Red Stoles, and Barbara Larison who had her tassel changed from green to red.

Co-Workers, the ladies bowling team we sponsor is hosting a bake sale fund raiser on October 5th and 8th before Bingo. Since the bowling team consists of only four ladies maybe some other co-workers can lend us a hand. We will really appreciate any home baked items you would like to donate. Please bring them to the Lodge by 4:00 p.m. Thursday or 11:00 a.m. Sunday, or if you can bake something, but can't get it to the lodge, call me and I will be happy to pick it up.

Tiffany Biggs, Mooseheart Chairman, will host our meeting October 2. Please remember October is when we do our Christmas marches for Mooseheart and Moosehaven, so we will appreciate it if everyone can bring a little extra money along to donate towards Christmas gifts for our Mooseheart and Moosehaven residents. Also, since we have started our nursing home bingo, Tiffany would like as many people as possible to bring a pair of slipper socks or socks for our nursing home bingo players. Tiffany will also be hosting our Wednesday night dinner on October 18th. She is planning on serving roast pork with all the trimmings. I hope everyone will come and enjoy the meeting and dinner.

On Monday, October 23 we will be playing bingo at Arbor View Nursing Home at 6:30 p.m. If you have some time available to donate to a worthwhile comunity service project please come and join us.

Our children's Halloween party is going to be held this year on October 21 from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Bring your children and grandchildren for a fun time. We will have lunch, costume judging and some other fun activities. And, as always, some of our great bakers will provide cupcakes for dessert. Mary Jane Biggs-Swain is planning to have a book sale fund raiser in November. Anyone who has books they would like to donate can either call me or Mary Jane at (847) 872 -3319.

5th Annual Rib cookoff

Bob Miller, Chairman & Dave Killen, Co-chair

We will be having our fifth annual Rib Cook Off at the pavilion on Saturday, October 7th.

Here is your chance to earn bragging rights for cooking the best ribs. There will be a $100 Grand Champion Award; $50 for best sauce, and $50 for any item other than ribs cooked in a smoker or grill.

The pavilion will open at 10:00 AM to give the chefs time to prepare their entries. Members are encouraged to invite a guest to participate and sign up for the cook off. The past few years “Theme” addition has been a great success. This year the theme will be “Rat Pack.” Come on you Sinatra, Martin and Sammy fans, here is your chance to relive the days of old. All contestants and even non-contestants are encouraged to dress themselves and their cooking areas to resemble the Rat Pack Era. All participants and onlookers can vote on who they feel has the best themed cooking area. The winner gets a cash prize.

This is a great opportunity to show guests the fun we have and maybe sign them up as members. Members who do not enter are also welcome to be a part of the day by coming down, watching the action, and (like last year) sample some of the entries!

The bar will be open with MILLER product specials and food available for purchase.

Entry fee is $20. Sign up sheet, complete details and rules are available in the Social Quarters. The event will take place rain or shine.
